Pretty Awesome Infographics

Screen Shot 2014-10-22 at 9.49.12 AM

Our 8th grade students just completed their Tech Balance Infographics and they turned out, well, pretty awesome!  This was a project we have never done before and we also used online programs that was pretty much foreign to us.  Not only did students learn more about how to balance tech in their busy lives, they all learned how to use new programs to create their infographics.  Such a great skill to learn!  And the most important part of the project, they took the time to research, learn and relay information about a part technology balance they felt passionate about and are now ADVOCATES for Technology Balance.  Pretty amazing!  Nice work 8th graders!

Screen Shot 2014-10-06 at 10.30.56 AM

Infographics are used quite a bit in reporting health news, as they’re a visually appealing way to get facts and statistics out to the community.

Here are some samples…

Infographic: Meditation in Schools Across America

Infographic: 15 Scientifically Proven Ways to be Happier

Today you’re going to create your own and demonstrate advocacy by taking your posters to a whole new level.

Project- Tech Balance Infographics

Standard 2- Analyzing the influence of technology on personal & family health.

Your task: pick one of the topics that we’ve been discussing during our technology balance unit, gather some research, and create an infographic to get your point across.

Here are some possible topics…

-Digital footprint

-Tech balance/ face-to-face communication

-Digital Citizenship

-Time management/tech distractions

-The benefits of video games

-Mindfulness in a connected world

Pick a topic that interests you, or another one of your choice, do a little research, and find at least four facts or statistics to include in your infographic.

Then use one of these easy to follow programs and get started…

And the Marshmallow Studies Continue!

Screen Shot 2014-09-16 at 3.15.16 PM

Everyone and their brother knows the marshmallow test.  A test where a marshmallow is set in front of a 5 year old child for 15 minutes and told by a researcher if they do not eat the marshmallow while they are gone, when they come back, they will get two.  In recent NY times article, Pamela Drukerman, talks to the famous psychologist Dr. Walter Mischel about his well known marshmallow test and what he’s doing with his studies on this test these days.

Dr. Mischel has come out with a new book called The Marshmallow Test: Mastering Self Control that emphasizes that it’s not all about self-control at the age of 5 that could possible determine your future, but self-control can be learned.  Phew.  So good to know for future marshmallow test participants… and their parents!  I mean, what if a kid is just super hungry during the test?!  Read the article in full below for more details about his recents studies:

Well, off to do the marshmallow test to my daughter who just turned 5!  I’ll let you know how she does!

Video Games Good for Kids?? Yes!

Screen Shot 2014-09-03 at 8.01.55 AM

All you gaming junkies are probably jumping up and down right now, but hold on kids (and some of you parents out there!), there is a but…

Recent studies have shown that video games can be beneficial for kids but only when played 1 hour or less a day.  Anything after an hour can be potentially harmful kids health.  So why and how can video games be beneficial?

Here’s a few ways a little gaming per day can be beneficial for children:

  • increased feelings of happiness
  • more well adjusted
  • more helpful
  • more emotionally stable
  • higher levels of sociability
  • less hyperactivity
  • secure friendships

If video games are played for more than one hour, then you will find the opposite effects of the benefits above in children.  In an article by Dennis Thompson from WebMD he states, “Video game junkies were more likely to be moody, unhappy with their life and apt to act out in negative ways.”

So kids grab that controller and start gaming for that beneficial hour!  But after your homework is completed of course!!!!

The Power of Mindful Meditation

Screen Shot 2014-08-22 at 9.33.07 AM

Meditation, a practice that calms, reduces not so great stress and anxiety plus a handful of other health benefits, is a fad that has caught fire around world in the last couple years.  Although it may have started as a fad, I truly think meditation and the practice of teaching people how to be more mindful of themselves and their thoughts and emotions is fad that’s here to stay.  Especially as more and more kids are practicing meditation in schools who have implemented a meditation/mindfulness program into their daily school day.

In our health classes, we use meditation to start off our classes, every other class.  But our hope is that students will take what they learn from meditation and use it as a preventative outlet to reduce stress and anxiety at home. Of course we are also in hopes that our school will implement a meditation program school wide.

Some students are very lost when it comes to meditation so for the first half of the semester we use a guided meditation program called Smiling Mind out of Australia.  This gives students to learn how to meditate and understand that it may be difficult at first to sit for 6 min and just do NOTHING, but by the end of the semester, they’re asking for more time to meditate.

Prior to starting the program we want our students to understand all the health benefits they get from meditation.  The following video clips and articles are ones that we share with our students so they have a better understanding of WHY we take time to meditate in Health Class.  In the end, all the kids LOVE it!  And so does the teacher:)
